The clients came in wanting a new kitchen. Three hours in the house and it was clear the kitchen was fine - it was doing four jobs and needed to be doing two.

So we did not touch it. Instead the lean-to at the back became a proper utility: washing machine and dryer stacked, a deep butler sink, a drying rack on a pulley, hooks and a bench for boots, and floor-to-ceiling storage for everything that had been living on the kitchen worktop.

It cost a fifth of what they had budgeted, and they wrote to say the kitchen feels twice the size. Sometimes the best drawing is the one you talk yourself out of.
