An avocado suite, a floral tile border and a plastic screen. The room itself was fine: good proportions, a tall window at the far end, and an alcove that made a natural place for the bath.
So nothing moved. The soil pipe stayed where it was, the window stayed where it was, and the money went into the things you touch. Tongue-and-groove panelling hand-painted to dado height in a chalky blue, a honed limestone floor laid straight through, a washstand built like a piece of furniture, and unlacquered brass over the bath instead of a screen and a pump.
Rebuilding a bathroom without moving a pipe is the cheapest good decision most houses have available to them.
