The house had a galley kitchen with a boxed soffit, a serving hatch and a dining room nobody sat in. Taking out one stud wall gave a single room the width of the house, but it also took away every wall the storage had been living on.
So the plan starts with a pantry. Full-height, 600 deep, with a marble shelf at counter height for the things that get used daily and a lift-out shelf for the mixer. Everything the old wall units held now stands behind two doors, which is what let the rest of the room stay quiet: one long run under the window, an oak table where the dining room used to be, and nothing above waist height except a shelf.
The marble turns the corner behind the range on a mitred joint, so the veining runs on without a break. It took two attempts at the template. It was worth both.
